Founded as a pilot project in 1991 by a French NGO (GRET), Amret has since evolved into the largest MFI with one of the widest networks in Cambodia. As of September 2015, total assets were USD 459.9 million.

Amret is a leading micro-finance institution in Cambodia and the largest in rural areas. Amret focuses on the poorest segments of the population and has developed many kinds of financial products and services, especially small scale loan for people in the rural areas and medium scale loan for small and medium enterprises. With its investment, Norfund wishes to contribute to making basic financial services available to the poor.
