Most of the customers to Housing Finance Company get home financing through a product called "Owner Occupied Mortgage", which means direct loans to the individuals for their own housing. Further, HFC offers loans through cooperations with employers. HFC only provide loans to salaried people, who are either employed within a company or self-employed with documented income.
Financial institutions need to receive long-term debt from their investors to be able to offer this type of long-term loans to their clients. Such capital is often scarce in the region. With this investment, Norfund has contributed to increased access to finance and affordable housing for middle-income families in Kenya.
